Sport: Life in the UK test revision

What the Life in the UK test can ask about this topic, explained in plain English. We have 26 checked facts on this topic, and 6 of them are Test Traps. Here are the 5 that come up most.

The facts to know

What are the two different types of rugby?

Union and league.

Rugby split into two codes over a century ago, and they've stayed separate ever since, with different rules, different clubs and different competitions. Union's big event is the Six Nations; league's is the Super League.

Test Trap. the Six Nations is rugby UNION; the Super League is rugby LEAGUE. Match the competition to the right code.

Why it matters: Union versus league is a distinction the test can probe, especially via their competitions.

Memory hook: Two rugbies: union and league.

Which six teams compete in the Six Nations Championship?

England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, France and Italy.

Four home nations plus France and Italy. Note that Ireland plays as one team, Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic together, which is why the list says 'Ireland', not 'Northern Ireland'.

Test Trap. in rugby, Northern Ireland plays together with the Irish Republic as 'Ireland' — so the Six Nations includes Ireland, not Northern Ireland.

Why it matters: In rugby the island of Ireland plays as one team. Questions rely on you forgetting that.

Memory hook: Four home nations, plus France and Italy, six.

What is the Super League?

The most well-known rugby league club competition.

Don't confuse it with football's Premier League. The Super League is rugby league's top club competition: the other code of rugby, separate from union and the Six Nations.

Test Trap. the Super League is rugby league; the Premier League is football.

Why it matters: 'Super League' and 'Premier League' sound alike but belong to different sports.

Memory hook: Super League: rugby league's big one.

Official handbook: Chapter 4, section 4.7, page 66

Where is the Grand National held?

Aintree, near Liverpool.

Three racecourses to keep apart: Aintree (the Grand National, near Liverpool), Ayr (the Scottish Grand National) and Ascot (Royal Ascot, in Berkshire). The National Horseracing Museum is in a fourth place — Newmarket, Suffolk.

Test Trap. Grand National = Aintree (Liverpool); Scottish Grand National = Ayr; Royal Ascot = Berkshire; Horseracing Museum = Newmarket.

Why it matters: Four horse-racing places beginning with A or N. The test loves to shuffle them.

Memory hook: Aintree for the National, Ayr for the Scottish one.

Where was the first tennis club founded, in 1872?

Leamington Spa.

Not Wimbledon: Leamington Spa, a town in Warwickshire, is where the first tennis club was founded in 1872. Wimbledon came a few years later and became the famous one.

Test Trap. the first tennis club was in Leamington Spa (1872), not Wimbledon.

Why it matters: Wimbledon is the tempting wrong answer here. The test may use exactly that trap.

Memory hook: Leamington Spa, 1872: tennis's first club.
